O' Hare Irish dancers perform at Irish American Heritage Center and Abbey Pub St. Pat 's Day events

Chicagoboasts a huge and lively Irish American community that provides a host of St. Patrick’s Day activities to choose from. Of course, the official celebrations don’t begin until the traditional dying of the Chicago River green (which is actually a murky green anyway) and the downtown St. Patrick’s day Parade. The South Side parade, which captured the essence of Chicago’s Irish American community for 31 years, has been cancelled but there are still loads of events on the South and North sides of the city to make you shout Erin Go Bragh!

1. St. Patick’s Day Festival at Abbey Pub

An authority on Irish music, Abbey pub serves up Irish music and dance on March 14 and 17th. Catch the O’ Hare Irish Dancers and Shannon Rovers Bag Pipers on both days, among a lineup of five acts.

2. St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at the Irish American Heritage Center

There’s no other place in Chicago where you can experience more authentic Irish culture. On March 17, the day long festivities kick off with a traditional St. Patrick’s Day mass and include Irish food, dance and traditional and contemporary Irish music.

3. Parade Wake at Beverly Woods Restaurant

The South Side Parade won a special place in the hearts of many Chicagoans so its only fitting to hold a wake to mourn its loss. The Beverly Woods restaurant has been a popular hallmark of the South Side Beverly community since 1954. The wake includes a eulogy, music, appetizers and a cash bar.

4.Southside Irish Fest at Reggie’s Music Joint

On March 14, enjoy live music and an all you can eat buffet of green eggs and ham and then hop a free shuttle bus to the South Side for more St. Pat’s Day activities.

5.North Side Irish Barade

Lincoln Park organizers came up with an Irish pub bar crawl as an alternative to the sorely missed South Side Parade. The event includes trolley service between six bars including Duffy’s, Durkins, Maeve and McGee’s and food buffets and Bud Light drafts.
